One of the things that causes severe harm to the environment is the way that people dispose of their waste. If trash is thrown away incorrectly, it may not be able to be recycled, and the work that it takes to compact and burn the trash at a landfill is increased, which is bad for the air we breathe. So, what are some of the best ways to practice safe waste disposal?
First, you'll need to figure out which type of waste you are trying to dispose of. Most of the waste that is becoming difficult to recycle is solid waste. This includes thins like household trash, or old boxes and bags thrown away by factories and retail establishments. There is also liquid waste, which may include household cleaners that you are not using anymore, or water that is deposited back into the sewage system. There are also wastes that are part liquid and part solid, such as sludge. If these items are separated properly in the recycle bins when city sanitation workers come to collect the trash, the waste can be taken to the proper recycling center and used to create new products. However, many people do not recycle, and it can be difficult to separate the waste from every home or business without leaving some items out.
You'll also need to know which items are hazardous when you're trying to separate your items for waste disposal. If a chemical or solid waste product is non-hazardous, that means it does not pose a threat to the health or physical safety of human beings or animals. If you are dealing with items like paint or harsh cleaning materials, you may want to ask your sanitation department to give you a special container to use when disposing of these items, since they can cause respiratory problems, poisoning, and skin irritation.
Waste disposal is usually done by taking the trash to a landfill, since this is usually the most cost effective method. However, the materials that are taken to the landfill need to be biodegradable, so that it can decompose back into the soil. For the items that are not, the fill is packed with cement or asphalt, so that these materials will not find their way back into the city's water supply. Using an incinerator for waste disposal is and other popular method; it is more expensive than landfills, but destroys more waste and is usually safer. However, hazardous gases can be released if trash is not disposed of properly before arriving at the incinerator.
If you want to know more about waste disposal in your city, you can visit the Department of Health, or check out the health regulations that are being put in place by the World Health Organization at www.who.int.
