Do you enjoy scuba diving or snorkeling? Are you particularly interested in learning more about the animals that live in the seas and oceans? The marine ecosystem is pretty fascinating, and there are lots of layers that make this underwater world complete. Here is some information about the animals that live here, as well as some things you can do to make sure that their environment is protected.

The marine ecosystem is part of the earth's aquatic environment, and includes oceans, mangrove forests, salt marshes and lagoons. Some tropical ecosystems are also included in this group. The main difference between the marine ecosystem and other aquatic life systems is that the salt content of the water is much higher, which makes the environment home for different animals than those that live in fresh water.

Tropical fish that are quite colorful are comfortable in this type of ecosystem, and there are a number of coral reefs that live in the marine ecosystem as well. Coral is a living organism, but it is not quite a plant, so it does not need the soil and sunlight that 'land' plants require. Many types of animals also live in the coral reefs, and algae such as kelp, and other plants that make their home on the bottom of the sea are comfortable in the marine ecosystem as well.

When you visit an exotic island, you may find that going saltwater diving will help you to learn more about how the animals in this environment live. Larger fish, whales, and sharks occupy these waters as well, so if you are going diving with the guidance of an instructor, you'll need to scope out the area first to make sure it is safe. Lots of the seafood that are used for human consumption are also found in the marine ecosystem; in some cases, this helps to keep the seafood fresher, since salt works as a natural preservative.

Do you want to do your part to support the marine ecosystem? You can start by saving water as much as you can. For instance, limit your shower time to about two or three minutes each morning, and be sure to keep the water off while you're brushing your teeth. You can also limit the time you use your hose to water your lawn or garden plants, and making sure that you have a full load to wash before turning the washing machine on will help as well. You can also find out more about the toxins that are affecting the animals that live in the marine ecosystem in environment by visiting the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov. Do your part and help save this delicate system.
