Each and every day you come into contact with an ecosystem of some sort. It is all around us and encompasses everything we touch. Many people do not realize the impact humanity has on the Earth's ecosystems. It is a delicate balance that requires diligence and education if the balance is to be maintained. Unfortunately far too many individuals do not realize the impact they have on nature's delicate ecosystem or even the ecosystem in which they live. Do you realize the impact?
There are many different ecosystems in the world and it is important to know how they affect our daily lives and how we have an integral part in that ecosystem. In this article we will cover the basics of ecosystems and even delve into how they are classified. Hopefully this article will cover any questions you may have about the environments around you.
How are ecosystems classified?
Ecosystems are classified according by several different methods. It may be classified according to the vegetation and terrain such as in a rainforest ecosystem. Some are classified under the atmosphere in which they live such as in a marine ecosystem. As of yet there is not a uniform classification system but authorities and scientists in the field of ecosystems are diligently working to produce a universal classification system to help identify ecosystems in order to protect them.
What is the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment?
In 2001 an effort was launched by researchers and scientists to study the world's ecosystems and determine how much damage mankind has done to the surrounding ecosystems of the world. It was the largest effort in history to catalog and label the Earth's ecosystems. It was concluded that over the past fifty years more damage has been done to the world's ecosystems than at any other time in mankind's history. This assessment is important to humans everywhere if we want to continue to live in a sustaining environment. We have to know the repercussions that we have on the environment if we are to make the necessary changes for the future to have a healthier Earth.
What is a biome?
A biome is another name for an ecosystem. It is a group of plants, animals and soil organisms working together in one contained area. It may be an urban biome or a biome in the outback of Australia. Even our homes are considered to be a biome within a larger biome of area. You have to remember that it also encompasses any non-living entity that is found within the area.
How do ecosystems develop?
It all begins with an organism and an environment. From that initial starting point an ecosystem is begun. As the organisms grow and flourish along with flora and other fauna coming into the area the ecosystem begins to take shape. The best example would be a piece of coral beginning to grow in a marine environment. As the coral grows and more coral is added, fish and other marine species begin to take refuge and food from the coral. It is now an ecosystem. Granted, it is an ecosystem within a larger ecosystem but it is one nonetheless.
